Year 11 Speech Competitions
On the final day of Term 2, the Year 11 Speech competition was held. Eight speakers represented their various English classes. The standard was once again extremely high, making it difficult for the judge (Stacey Fry) to select the eventual winner. One point only separated those who gained first, second and third places. Alex Gamby-Newman spoke on an original, clever topic – “Cliché’s” – to gain third place. Pania Corbett-Burrows gained a lot of audience interest speaking on “Beauty”, Lucie Gray entertained and informed the audience outlining the pitfalls when traveling to India.
Well done to all competitors. Everybody spoke well and maintained the truly phenomenal standard of public speaking abilities evident here at Motueka High School.
1st Lucie Gray
2nd Pania Corbett-Burrows
3rd Alex Gamby-Newman
Year 12 & 13 Media Studies
Y12 & 13 Media Studies students perform a Smokefree Demo
In April this year Media Studies teacher Stacey Fry was approached by Alison Bennett from the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board to see if some of her students would be interested in running a Regional SmokeFree Campaign. Bonnie McDonald, Jessie Templeton, Ainslie Ryder, Victoria Kaihe, Lucy McClintock, Kathryn Whinray, Kelsie Inglis, Katie Graham & Ellie Beatson from Years 12 and 13 Media Studies took up the challenge! After many phone calls, emails and meetings (including one with the Tasman Makos) we were able to perform a Smokefree demonstration at several Nelson schools. We also ran a text competition which was promoted on local radio. This was a valuable opportunity, we all learnt a lot, and we hope that we were able to positively influence the young people of the region.
