The PE Department is well into their review of their Scheme having completed the writing of a new vision and mission statement. Staff are now reviewing the content of courses offered at the senior school and are looking to make changes for 2008. New Mission Statement:

To provide meaningful, quality learning opportunities that will empower all students to be active for life, and that will develop and extend their skills, attributes, knowledge and wellbeing in an enjoyable and non threatening environment.

Changes in Procedures in Physical Education

NOTICE TO ALL PARENTS

This is to inform you that there is to be a change in procedures in PE for students unable to participate fully.

From Week 2 on, students unable to participate due to injury or illness will be expected to bring a change of clothes and to take an adjusted part in lessons or assist as applicable. For this reason notes to excuse students will need to state a clear reason for not taking a full role in lessons so that the activities can be best adapted to their needs.

We would like to remind you that students have a choice of what to wear in Physical Education, as long as it is practicable.

Thank you for your support on what we believe is an important life skill.

Outdoor Education

Year 9 on the water Year 9 Adventure Skills
The first of the Year 9 Adventure Skills modules finished recently with a successful journey into Abel Tasman National Park. Students had been working hard to organize their equipment, plan menus and develop skills so their time in the park would be enjoyable and safe. The planning certainly paid off as we experienced torrential rain and gales force winds on the first night at Anchorage. There were a few soggy looking students the following morning, however the sun soon came out and the smiles returned. After three days of tramping and sea kayaking everyone was proud of their efforts and full of stories to share. Well done to everyone involved.

Year 12 Outdoor Education
The theme for term two has become bad weather!
Our year 12 students experienced the first of this winters polar blasts on their tramp into Kahurangi National park in early June. Proper planning and packs laden with food was the order of the day. Although the sun was a rare sight everyone enjoyed themselves…..and passed their assessment!

Year 13 Outdoor Education
Year 13 students have been spending a fair bit of time underground this term. Our local area is world renown for its cave systems and students have been getting up close and personal with the remarkable geological formations caves offer (not to mention the occasional cave weta). After training in the techniques of SRT (single rope technique) at the Whenua iti tower and Greenlink cave, students descended into the darkness of Middle Earth cave for a challenging six hour trip that involved rope descent and ascents, staggering limestone formations and squeezes aptly named “let me go” and “hold me tight”.

Year 13 Module
The module students can now redefine cold after their recent survival tramping into Kahurangi National Park. Camping on the shady side of Gordons Pyramid was never going to be tropical, but a combination of clear skies and the shortest day of the year resulted in a layer of frost thicker than most expected. Off track navigation through the Dracophyllum trees the following day generated enough energy to warm up again.

HEALTH EDUCATION AND BULLYING PREVENTION

Student Contacts The Term 2 focus in Health Education for Year 9 students is Bullying Prevention. So far many students have shown care and concern about others by participating openly and honestly in discussions. This unit aims to help students develop an understanding of :
- What behaviours and comments are considered bullying?
- Why people choose to bully?
- What are the effects of bullying?
- Empathy for what the victim feels or is experiencing
- Why is it unacceptable?
- Who is actually involved in bullying? (victim, bully or bystander)
- What can be done to overcome Bullying?
- What people/agencies can help?

Bullying Prevention is strengthened by students understanding what qualities and behaviors make up a great friendship and applying that knowledge to their lifestyles. The intended outcome of this programme for the students is to understand the behaviors and comments that are accepted and expected at Motueka High School to make it a safe, enjoyable and enticing school for everyone.

Bullying is not tolerated here at Motueka High School. It is often the continuous niggling behaviour that teachers don’t always see that can be the most hurtful to students.
As parents, if your son/daughter has concerns about being on the receiving end or witnessing behaviour that is hurtful, both you and them can do the following things:
- Students-talk to one of the people listed
In this article
- Parents-talk to your children/young adults
about what is happening.
- Ask what your child would like done about it. Obviously the student would like the behaviour to stop, however this can be achieved in a variety of ways. Having a full restorative justice meeting is not always necessary as there are many other options for students.
- Discussing these options with a dean or teacher of your child will often have positive results as teachers don’t know everything that is going on all of the time. If we don’t know we can’t help!

Text and Internet Bullying
As the art of verbal communication seems to diminish for a few years during adolescence while technological communication takes over, students are much more vulnerable to text or internet bullying. If your child is ever on the receiving end of hurtful, threatening or unpleasant messages and want them stopped these are the simple steps to follow:

- DO NOT REPLY TO THE MESSAGE.
It is vital that the student does not reply to the message. If they do, the authorities can not deal with the incident. And yes, previous message exchanges can be looked up on record
- Save the message so there is evidence
- Report it to the Police or call 0508 638723
The Police and Phone Company can then act and disconnect or ban the bully from the internet or mobile phone network.

N.B. As with a recent case in the media, if your child receives objectionable messages, images or videos about another person and forwards them to others without responding to the sender they could face the same action from the authorities as the person who originally sent the message.

Please help us reinforce this message to our students
- Don’t respond!
- Save it!
- Report it!

0508 Netsafe (0508 638723) is a help line number for more information or to report any incidences. A helpful and student friendly website is www.stoptextbully.com.

What to do about Bullying?
Students who are experiencing bullying or those who are witnesses to bullying behaviour have a variety of people they can turn to for help, they could include:

1. Your subject teacher or a teacher you
trust to listen and help

2. Your Dean
Y9 Karen Wells & Luke Williams
Y10 Stacey Fry
Y11 Tony Aikenhead
Y12 Elsa O’Sullivan
Y13 Sue Thorp

3. Guidance Counsellor – Lorraine Mullings
available at Te Whare Pora (The House)

4. Senior Management – Rex Smith, Marieann
Keenan and Paul Blackbeard

If a student would prefer to talk to a peer, there are a number of student contacts that are available for help. They are rostered on lunchtime shifts over at The House and at all times they are identifiable by the ‘student contact’ badge they wear.

If parents or students have any queries or comments about the Bullying Prevention programme or any information mentioned in this article, Jodie Mitchell or Kate Matthews (Health Teachers) can be contacted via the school office.

Climbing

The Motueka High School Climbing team once again triumphed at the Marlborough/Tasman Secondary Schools Climbing Championships.

What's happenning in Phys Ed during Term 2 2008?

Term two is here and the weather certainly has changed. Remember that in Phys Ed you can wear what you like, so long as it is practical to do physical activity. Rug up a bit by wearing tracksuit pants and sweat shirts especially if you are outside and its also a good time of year to bring outdoor or indoor shoes.

Here is a brief description of what’s happening over the term.

The Year 9 students are into some cross country training as this event is on Thursday 15 May. Then they have a kicking unit (football and rugby) and a dance unit to complete.

Year 10 are completing some aerobic training in preparation for the cross country and then they have a kicking unit also and gymnastics in their inside time slot.

Year 11 Phys Ed class are getting into the nuts and bots of PE studying Anatomy, Biomechanics and body responses to exercise.

Year 12 Phys Ed class are applying the theory of skill learning and psychology to badminton and will then be looking at the significance of the Olympic Games.

Year 13 Phys Ed will be trying their hand at squash and applying their knowledge gained over the last few years to improve their performances

Year 11 Sport and Recreation class will be completing a unit called ‘assisting others to participate’ where they will get the opportunity to plan and officiate a team based activity.

Students are advised to bring alternative footwear as school shoes are not permitted in the gym. This is to help us keep the gym floor in a clean and useable state as over the winter terms the school shoes certainly drag in a lot of dirt.

Remember, if your son/daughter is unable to participate in a practical activity because of illness or injury then please send them to school with a note and their PE uniform. We would like to involve them in some way, like helping the teacher with tasks, so that they don’t just sit and pass the time. Should you wish them not to be doing anything then please state that on the note.

Our philosophy in Phys Ed is to get students involved at all levels of activity so that they can develop lifelong skills and wellbeing.

See you out there!
