In Week 8 of Term 2 the Year 9 class learnt something about the history of “la tour Eiffel” (the Eiffel Tower) and made models of it to display in the classroom or to take home.
In the same week they held “un petit dejeuner à la française “ – a French style breakfast - in the classroom consisting of croissants, “tartines”,(slices of crusty baguette with jam) and “chocolat chaud” and “café au lait” to drink out of bowls.
The Year 10 class are setting up a “Creperie” in their classroom where they will prepare and eat crepes, “gaufres” (waffles), “sandwichs au jambon et au fromage” and “croque-monsieurs”. They will practise their French, ordering their food and paying for it with “euros”. The senior students (Years 11 and 12) say they want to join in too!!

Year 9 & 10 French 'Creperie'

In the last week of Term 2, the senior French class enjoyed the Creperie that they organised and set up. Students brought their own ingredients and drinks. Gaufres (waffles), crepes (pancakes), sandwiches and croquet-monsieurs (toasted sandwiches) were just some of the delicious food they prepared and sold. The class had to order in French and pay with fake Euros. It was a great but fattening experience!

Maori Studies Department 2006

Kia Ora Tatou, The Whanau Form Class of 2006 has 72 students. I welcome them all to be part of the 2006 Education Plan for Improving Maori Academic achievement in MHS. Tuakana and Tino Tuakana have written up their intermediate and long term goals for this year and by the end of the month all Teina also.
Special welcome to Whaea Tania Corbett who is employed as a full time teacher teaching Te Reo Maori years 9 – 11 and in the Social Sciences Department teaching in the junior school. He tino taonga ia ki a matou.

This year the Whanau Class, as in previous years, is divided into The Form Class, Te Reo Classes years 9 – 13, Maori Studies years 11-13, Kapa Haka - Culture Group and Te Runga Matua – Parent Group.

I acknowledge the Kapa Haka Group for their fine Powhiri performance of welcome to the new teachers, students and Kiyosato school visitors.

The Form Class is subdivided into three groups -Teina years 9 & 10, Tuakana years 11 & 12 and Tino Tuakana year 13 and a Kai Taunaki (Student Representative for the school). Katene Ruawai year 13 was elected as this year's Kai Taunaki. Katene is also the Kaea (Leader) of the Kapa Haka Group.

There are 128 students of Maori descent at MHS this year and 12 of them are in year 13. This is the largest number of year 13 Maori students since I began keeping records for this level – 1991 foundation year.

2006 is shaping to be a good academic, cultural and sporting year for Whanau Members, there is an air of excitement buzzing through the Form Class.

Whaea Tania and I were pleased to meet and greet the parents and year 9 students joining the Whanau Form Class to each student and Family we look forward to a long and happy whanau relationship.

Events to look forward to are the School Manu Korero Speech Competition Mid April and the Combined Roopu Kapa Haka – Te Rourou Kura National Secondary Schools Cultural Competitions in June.

Te Rourou Kura this year is made up of students from Golden Bay High, MHS, Waimea, Nayland, NBC, NCG & MGC. Their first 2006 practise was a day camp at Whakatu Marae 11 February. 8 MHS students attended along with a parent, 6 other students are interested in joining and this is healthy because positions in the group are restricted to best performers. The group is for established performers of the art and not a learners/beginners group. But if one is interested in wanting to know more about the group with the intent of joining then the next scheduled practise is on the weekend of 3-5 March at Te Awhina Marae commencing at 6pm.
