The Secondary Numeracy Project (SNP)

2010 sees Motueka High School in the second year of the contract to the SNP. This national project is focused on developing number sense and mental arithmetic skills initially at Y9 level and is this year being integrated into the Y10 course. The aim is to ensure a very sound base is laid for those students continuing with the traditional academic maths courses in the senior school. A well attended evening meeting held in Term 1 gave parents the opportunity to discus and understand the aims of the project. Nearly all of our contributing schools have been in the Primary Numeracy Project for several years.

Maths Student of the Week

Each Monday in Assembly, the Maths student for the previous week is announced. The $5 canteen voucher is awarded to a student who is making the most of their learning opportunities in their maths classroom and with their homework. It is recognising genuine effort and a positive attitude rather than just mathematical talent.

This year, the Maths Student of the Week is being sponsored by Pied Stilt Vineyard which is located in Lower Moutere. Several Motueka High students worked in the vineyard over the last two years. They made such a good impression with their work ethic that the vineyard offered to sponsor the maths Student of the Week.

Tutoring

Many Y9, Y10 and Y11 classes have the bonus of Y13 students contributing their study periods and expertise to help students to reach their potential by assisting in the class or taking tutorials during class time.
We also offer a Monday lunch time self directed computer based tutorial in room 17 where students from all levels can use a multitude of websites to enhance their learning of Mathematics. This caters for students from Y9 to Y13 who may wish to develop their understanding of any concept from addition of numbers to writing equations related to conic sections. The current recommended websites are;
Y11 to Y13 click here
Y9 to Y12 click here
These websites are available free on your home or library computers too.
Should further tutorials be required please contact your classroom teacher or Faith Jackson (HOD) to discuss your options.

Australian Maths Competition

The 2010 Australian Math Competition is being held on Thursday 5th August. All students in the junior extension classes and other pupils who are talented at problem solving are expected to compete which requires an entry fee of $6 payable to the office in term 1. Certificates are awarded at a level of Participation, Credit, Merit or Excellence. This extension activity is valuable in challenging and rewarding students who are able to think mathematically and apply logical thinking.
