The Music Department makes it possible for students to be involved in a wide range of musical activities. There are opportunities for students to learn woodwind, brass, guitar, drums or singing at the school. Some instruments are available for hire from the school otherwise, if necessary, it is possible to hire one from Nelson.
Extra-curricular activities vary each year depending on the interests of students.
Showcase is held late in the first term. This could be called our MAD Day when Music Art and Drama students present a concert and display art work.
There are two school wind bands; the Junior Band is for students in their first year of learning an instrument while the Senior Band is for the more experienced players. Each year this band visits local primary schools to perform for the younger children.
The School Singers take part in these tours and meet regularly and build up a repertoire of songs for singing at public events. This includes Showcase and the twilight Concert as well as Prize Giving at the end of the year. Most of the Singers have singing tuition and are given the opportunity to sing in smaller groups at various venues.
Rock musicians at the school are frequently represented at the Smokefree Rock Quest and many of them have either guitar or drum lessons at school.
Their own comments tell it all:
“Rock Quest was awesome.”
“If you get the chance to be in Rock Quest - take it! It’s an incredible feeling playing in front of a mosh pit of 2000 people. A great experience, and I really developed as a player.”
Senior wind musicians are encouraged to enter the National Chamber Contest and each year groups gain experience performing ensemble music. Brass, wind and string players frequently participate and many of the students make a point of entering the contest each year while they are at school.
A major event in the School Calendar is the annual Talent Quest. This is always a very exciting night and attracts a large and enthusiastic audience. The Preliminaries are held over several lunchtimes with staff and student judges deciding which items should go through to the Finals. In the past few years almost half the school (in one form or another!) crossed the stage during the Preliminaries. It is the input of these students that makes our Talent Quest such a great success and so very popular with our community.
The School Jazz Band practises regularly with Mr Hudson, the Wind Tutor.
Each year they attend the Southern Jam Jazz Festival in Blenheim and once more the students tell the story:
“Thoroughly enjoyed the entire week-end.”
“It was cool to meet and do workshops with the N.Z. Army Band.”
Overseas music students are an important part of the music scene at the school. Some of them join the senior music classes and prepare music to perform at assessments recitals.
And one of them had this to say after her first performance:
“I was a little bit nervous before I played. I made mistakes but not too many! It was very good fun! Now it is a good memory for me.”
Drama Department
Year 9 and 10
Last term the compulsory Year 9 and 10 Drama option ended with the students showing off their skills in clowning to an appreciative audience at Laura Ingram Kindergarten.
With their skills in mime, slapstick and crazy magic tricks the students put on a colourful, fun and exciting show. I was very proud of them and congratulate all the junior classes who took part. Well done.
Year 11 Drama
Term 2 for year 11 was devoted to the theme of celebrating the Matariki. Students completed 3 AS including Mask making, Dance and a theatre study. The students entered their dance into the Talent Quest and came away with 2nd place, special thanks to teacher Emily Shepherd for her excellent teaching.
The final performance was celebrating the Matariki by celebrating the birth of the celestial beings. Students have made stunning masks and we hope to have these on display sometime this term in town. Our final performance was to be for the opening of the festival of lights but unfortunately due to rain we had to perform in the hall.
This term students are devising, which means they are creating their own plays. As a base they are taking well known fairy tales and giving them a moralistic twist!
Year 12 and 13 Drama
This term we are finally getting to perform our plays. The year 12’s are performing on the 31st July and the 1st August at 7.30 in the hall. The play is called Spin and it is a gritty and fast paced action play, not suitable for young children.
The year 13’s are performing ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, a classic play by Oscar Wilde.
We are looking forward to our impending Drama Trip on 23- 26 August. This is an exciting opportunity to see professional theatre at the playhouses in Wellington. The students are also having a tour and a workshop at Toi Whakaari , the NZ Drama school.

Local Artists Share Ideas
The Art Department recently hosted a visit by 6 local practising artists to complete a research Unit in Year 9. The students wanted to find out what it takes to have a career in Art. They brainstormed questions to ask each of the visitors and are currently completing their presentations to share their findings with their peers.
The artists were: Printmaker - Sue Thorp, Sculptor - Daryl Frost, Potter - Mike Perry, Stained Glass Worker - Lynn Price, Painter - Kath Wilkin-Slaney, and Charcoal/Pastel/Painter - Beth Salter.

MUSIC
CHAMBER MUSIC CONTEST
This contest will be held at the Nelson School of Music on 17 June. The brass quartet, Midtown Madness, has been formed by Ben Goodman, Liam Wright and David and Robert Deck. They are working hard practising for the competition and we wish them well in their performance on the night.
CHARLOTTE YATES
On the first day back this term we were most fortunate in having singer-songwriter, Charlotte Yates visit the Year 12 music class. She spent an invaluable hour and a half working with these students explaining some of the techniques of songwriting and helping them as they explored these concepts as they began writing their own songs. It will be interesting to see how these embryo songs develop in the next few weeks. Who knows! You may get a chance to hear some of them at the Talent Quest later in the year, in August!
