Lucie Gray - Fashion Designer

For Lucie Gray, fashion is much more than a subject, it's a passion. So for her third year of Soft Materials, Lucie wanted a challenge that would push her existing skills to a professional level. To find the appropriate client, Lucie emailed public relations firms, eventually getting the contact details of Robin Smith, an Auckland based fashion photographer and his girlfriend, fashion model Selina Daysh. After some discussion, it was decided that Lucie would make a dress for Selina in return for a professional photoshoot by Robin of Selina modelling it.

Moeke Paaka receives Excellence in Teaching Award

Motueka High School is the only school in the country of have won three Excellence in Teaching awards, now that Moeke has won the prestigious national prize.

Moeke is a te reo, social studies and Maori studies teacher who set up the whanau class, now acknowledged as a model for what works in schools.

He was handed a NEiTA Foundation Crystal Apple by fellow teacher Peter Allen, who was a natioanl winner two years ago. The school's third winner was music teacher Fay Bolt, who won a regional award in 1998. Along with the trophy, Moeke received a professional development grant of $2500. He intends to use the money to help train a group of other male Maori teachers, passing along strategies he has developed during his 17 years at Motueka High School.

The whanau class is open to all pupils but aimed at Maori and Pacific Island students. In it, Mr Paaka emphasises a code of conduct, having pride in being Maori and setting goals for each student, all in a context of Maori language and culture.

Displaying his trademark modesty at the award ceremony on 26 September, he said "I would have told Rex to put it in the post".

Callum Allardice

Callum was a member of a band that won the local RockQuest final. This is a combined band with other students from Nelson College and Garin College and continues Callum's success as a musician of note.

At the Southern Jam held in Blenheim in August, Callum gained the award for Most Outstanding Guitarist and Most Outstanding Musician and was part of the Best Combo which was a combination of 8 musicians made up of Motueka High School and Nelson Colleges.

SADD Distractions at Motueka High

By Loren Greenwood and Anna Whyte

To celebrate the twenty first anniversary of Students Against Driving Drunk, Motueka High started their own tradition of a student run ‘SADD Distraction’. Similar to the television show, although less controversial and more fun. Teams went through a gruelling preliminary round, to be selected for the finals against the teachers, in front of the school. The students’ team consisted of year 13 students; Kelsie Inglis, Cailin Morris-Trainor, Callum Smith and Jane Middleton. The Teachers’ Team were Principal Mr Smith, Deputy Principal Mr Blackbeard, Mr Sanders and Miss Hay.

As a ‘buzz in’ for the questions, the contestants had to wax their legs or arms, put pegs on their faces and ping themselves with rubber bands. While answering questions further distraction was endured by being flicked with towels, sprayed with shaving foam and pelted with water balloons from members of SADD.

The outcome of the event saw the teachers come out on top, winning the last round by a thread.

Even though this was all fun and games, Deputy Principal, Marieann Keenan, said that behind all the pranks there was a lot of sound information about driving safely. Students run the SADD programme themselves and practise what they preach by nominating sober drivers for parties and ensuring that drinking while driving is unacceptable.

Jessie Templeton

Jessie was selected to attend the Youth Parliament over the holidays. Jessie participated with other students from throughout NZ and enjoyed the challenge and the experience.
