2009 House Sports
HOUSE SPORTS
The 2009 House Sports were held on Friday the 13 February. Black Friday it may have been but while the weather was atrocious on Thursday the day dawned fine on Friday and the cloud cover created near perfect conditions for the activities.
The day began as usual with the house parades and the judging panel was joined by Gary Alsop from Sport Tasman. The themes each house had chosen for their parades were excellent and ranged from red house and their fire engine and “stop drop and roll” chant to Blue house with their Highlanders including a miniature horse. The trend of bribing the judges continued with a plethora of cakes of all shapes, sizes and colours. In the end Blue House with their organisation and team unity took out the points in this colourful event.
Competition started straight after the parade and the students competed fiercely all morning. Activities in the field were the same as last years, with students heavily involved at the ever popular slippery slide, which also became a good place to wash off some paint.
After a short lunch break the competition continued at the pool with some new activities. Two new games were introduced that had been created by students during rich learning activities in December 2008.
The first was called the ‘over unders hoop relay’ where students had to swim across the pool and come up through and down through hoops on the waters surface before passing the baton to their team mates. This proved to be challenging, especially if the baton was dropped in the deep end, and entertaining.
The second activity was called ‘basket-pool’. Here students jumped off the starting blocks, caught a ball passed to them from the poolside, and dunked it into a ‘hoop’ on the waters surface. Each team had 5 minutes to see how many ‘dunks’ they could get in that time. This proved very entertaining with the Kowhai girls showing up all other team by scoring an amazing 107 dunks in 5 minutes.
The house sports competition had an added incentive this year with a new cup up for grabs for the winning house. Once again the Day was excellent. It is a credit to our students that they compete intensely, support their peers and behave in a respectful and sportsmanlike manner.
At the end of the day, Kowhai house performed with distinction, winning a number of the field events and establishing a good lead on the others to take out the house sports cup for the first time.
I would like to congratulate everyone and thank all the staff who supported, encouraged and organised their students all day and the house captains who did a superb job of organising and leading their groups.

Term1 Report
Welcome back to another sporting programme for 2009. I hope everyone had a healthy and relaxing holiday and are ready to do battle against our opposing schools.
This year our major focus will be securing the shield in our 50th anniversary of the Lincoln High School Sports Exchange which will take place in August here at Motueka High School. Winter codes get ready for battle!!
Our 2008 Senior Mixed Touch Team was placed 7th at Nationals last December and our three athletes that competed at Nationals also in December were all placed. A full report of this is in the Insight.
The year has begun with a flurry with the School Swimming sports being held and our school Gillette Cup cricket team playing a lead up game against Nayland College. Events taking place to the end of March are: House Sports day, Tennis, Touch, Mountain Biking, Triathlon and Athletics. Towards the end of March we will be holding our Sports Registration Night – date TBC. All those who attend and pay their fees on the night go in the draw to have half their subs paid as well as a sport prize.
WANTED Coaches/Managers/Officials If you would like to do either of these duties for any particular sporting code please contact Adrienne Fry (Sports Coordinator) at school on 03 528 9050 or email me at afry@motuekahigh.school.nz. We would love to have you on board. There are coaching clinics available to attend at no cost. Thank you to Mr Michael Brewer for coming forward to coach our Senior Girls Volleyball team for 2009. Thank you also to all Staff who have put themselves forward to be Teacher-in-Charge of various sports.
Congratulations to our Sports Captains for 2009. They are Jessica Drummond and Andrew Beatson. I know these students are passionate about sport and will do an excellent job.
To all sporting students, I wish you all the best for an exciting year of competitive and recreation sport. Give it heaps and GET INVOLVED!
2009 Swimming Sports
This year the Motueka High School Swimming Sports were held very early on in the year in order to avoid clashes with Naqtional Swimming Championships. 9 February was again another blistering hot day and a keen group of 45 students swam their hardest from 11.30 until 2pm.
Ryan Cheyne of year 11, competing for the first time, was the stand-out performer on the day as he broke 6 records from the 8 events he entered. Max Gessler continued on with his record breaking form of last year to claim another 2 records in the O16 boys.
The day was hot, the pool was tropical, there was a very good atmosphere at the pool and there was also some close racing, particularly in the O16 Girls and Boys.
Thanks have to go to the timers who did a superb job under extremely hot and tiring conditions. Their efforts helped to make the event flow smoothly and meant that we got through the timetabled events in record time.

Athletics Sports 2009
On Thursday 26th February the Motueka High School Athletic Sports were held. Whilst areas around Motueka had experienced some heavy rain in the early hours of the morning, the track was dry and in superb condition. Entries this year equalled the record of 517 students set last year, proving that the vertical forms are having a superb effect on the house spirit and therefore participation in house events. It is certainly very pleasing to see such a high level of interest and participation in this annual event.
The day was a very successful one even if there were a few a few grey hairs added to the organisers as the dark clouds gathered over Brown Acre. Fortunately the wind changed, lunch was rescheduled and the events were completed on time and the day ended with huge support for runners in the inter house relays.
There were a number of excellent performances on the track and in the field. Missy Semour continued her fine form by smashing her own senior girls discus record by 5 metres. Ziggy Jefferies broke the U14 Boys High Jump and Shot Put record and Liam Reid broke the U14Boys 100m record that has stood since 1997.
The event staff did a superb job with very little rest as the impending bad weather meant we pushed on through the scheduled lunch break. However, they were kept well fed and watered with chocolate brownie coffee and juice.
An event of this size certainly takes a lot of organisation, both prior to and during the sports. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Phys Ed Department and all the staff at school that contributed to making this day a very successful one.
The house competition was again a close one with just one percent separating Red and Yellow in the participation points. However, the tables were turned in the performance stakes with Yellow proving they have a fine group of athletes.

GOLF
The Motueka High School Number 1 Golf Team won the 36 Hole Nett Championship at the Nelson/Marlborough Secondary School Championships held at Greenacres. The team had a comfortable lead after the morning round and played steadily in the afternoon round to ensure their victory. Playing conditions were extremely challenging in the second round with steady rain - the team stayed focused right to the end.
Outstanding performances came from Levi Kearns who finished runner-up in the Individual Gross and Todd Hamilton who was runner-up in the Individual Nett.
Motueka High School also had a second team in the 36 hole championship.

Cross Country
The ‘A’ course ran as per usual to test the championship runners and they certainly got a little more that they expected, with a couple of Clydesdale horses on the course creating added obstacles. Tessa Silcock proved that last year’s effort was no fluke by taking out the overall title for the girls while she is still a junior. Fastest on the day was Kurt Bolton in 26.38, although rumour has it there may have been a staff member who took line honours. Well done Jake Stow.
Thanks heaps to the house captains for their organisation of their houses and to all the staff who counted heads and laps and ensured the event ran smoothly.
