Senior Management

Scott Haines, HS - Principal
Scott has been Principal at Motueka High School since October 2009. Born and educated in Nelson, his most recent role was as Deputy Principal at Ashburton College in Mid-Canterbury. Scott places a strong emphasis on the importance of relationships within a school environment and is impressed with the sense of community at Motueka High School. He sees a great pride in the students and is enjoying meeting parents and caregivers as he settles into his new role. Paul Blackbeard, BB - Deputy Principal
Paul is one of the Deputy Principals. He has responsibility for day to day school organisation, School Calendar, Discipline, Detention System, Passes, Emergency Procedures, Prize Giving, NZQA Liaisons for NCEA, Exams (internal & external), Parent Evenings, Duty System and Marks Analysis. Marieann Keenan, KE - Deputy Principal
Marieann is the Deputy Principal in charge of discipline and guidance of years 9, 11 and 13. She also heads the Curriculum committee, co-ordinates the guidance system and learning support department, inducts new teachers, assists with the Student Council and leadership development programme, administers the welfare fund, reporting to parents, performance management, uniform, Ball, marketing, health and safety and gifted and talented provision. Adrienne Heath, HE - Head of Music
Adrienne joined the staff at the start of the year and takes on the role as Head of Music. Adrienne teaches music at all year levels and is also teaching a junior Social Studies class. email:aheath@motuekahigh.school.nz

Bruce Stare, ST - Timetabler
Bruce joined the staff of Motueka High School in 1981. His present teaching programme is in Science and Chemistry, but has included Mathematics in the past. The other major task he does is to build the School Timetable for each new year. This is an ongoing task these days, with sometimes major changes occurring every Term. He continues to enjoy the working environment at Motueka High School – a great team of supportive colleagues to work with, and generally friendly motivated students to teach. Faith Jackson, JA - Head of Mathematics
Faith has lived in the Motueka area since 2000 and she really enjoys the outdoor recreational opportunities this area has to offer, especially cycling and kayaking. She is currently the HOD of Maths and this year is teaching two Y9's and a Y11 class. Faith has also taken on the role of the In-school Facilitator for the Secondary Numeracy Project. She is an active member of the local Golf Club and is the teacher-in-charge of Golf. Graeme Coleman, CM - Head of Social Science
Graeme is the Head of the Social Science Department and teaches Social Studies, Geography and Tourism. Other areas in the Department include History and Community Issues. email:gcoleman@motuekahigh.school.nz

James Tait, TT - Assistant HOD Technology
James is the Assistant Head of Department Technology and teaches senior Food Technology and junior Social Studies. He worked as a chef for 12 years both in New Zealand and in London before returning to New Zealand and completing a History degree. James moved to Motueka having enjoyed cycle touring through the area previously. He enjoys reading as well as many different outdoor pursuits, especially tramping. email:jtait@motuekahigh.school.nz

Jan Trafford, TR - Head of Learner Support
Jan co-ordinates the Learner Support Department which includes Special Needs, Alternative Education, Special Assessment Conditions, Immigrant Students, Gifted and Talented students and the Community Volunteers at Motueka High School programme. She also writes reading and literacy resources for Learning Media Ltd and the Rainbow Reading programme. These resources are distributed to schools in New Zealand and the South Pacific. Jill Wipou, WP - Head of English
Jill is a returnee in 2002 after having left at the end of 1986 to teach in Auckland. Jill is HOD English, teaching English to all year levels. Extra-curricular interests include waka ama, softball and basketball. email:jwipou@motuekahigh.school.nz

Josh Burrell, BU - Head of Outdoor Education
Josh is the Head of the Outdoor Education Department and, therefore, spends a lot of time outside the classroom involved in kayaking, camping, tramping, snow caving, etc. email:jburrell@motuekahigh.school.nz

Kane Dyer, DY - Head of Art

Mary Wilson, OWI - Executive Officer
Mary has a varied role as Executive Officer. Her responsibility for the school’s finances covers everything from budgeting through to fundraising; the Property portfolio requires management of the buildings and grounds; and in between times there is payroll to keep on track. Nick Wiffen, WF - Head of Science
Nick teaches Physics at Levels 2-4 and is the ICT Co-ordinator. He holds degrees in Physics and Instrumentation from Brunel University, UK and in Astrophysics from Queen Mary and Westfield College, UK. Nick taught for 3 years each at Southfield Community College and St Marylebone School, both in London. He came to New Zealand late in 2004 from Saltus Grammar School in Bermuda where he also taught for 3 years. Nick believes he has settled in the most beautiful place in the world and he intends to bring up his two boys here. Te Marunui Toki, TK - Head of Maori
Te Marunui joined us in 2010 after teaching in Ashburton. His specialty is teaching Te Reo Maori from years 9-13. He also teaches woodwork, metalwork and graphics in the technology department. Todd Adams, AD - Head of Physical Education
Todd has been at Motueka High School since 2000, after spending five years teaching at the Kapiti Coast. He is originally from Christchurch and spent most of his summer holidays in the Nelson region. Todd is Head of Physical Education and has responsibility for Professional Development programmes for teachers. She teachers Science, Year 10 Environmental Education, and Biology; this year Amy is also the Year 12 Dean. She is passionate about improving the school and community environment and facilates the Motueka Environmental Conservation Association (MECA), which is a student run group and has about 20 members and is growing. Karen Wells, WE - Year 11 Dean
Karen is the Year 11 Dean. Karen rejoined the staff late in 2006, having been a long term reliever in 2003. She grew up in Nelson and decided to move back to the region in 2003 to be closer to extended family and enjoy better weather. She currently teaches Information and Communication Technology and Taha Maori. In the community she is involved with Te Rourou Kura (Secondary Schools Kapa Haka) and Te Kahui Matauranga (Maori Education Committee). email:kwells@motuekahigh.school.nz

Sue Thorp, TP - Year 10 Dean
Sue Thorp has been on the staff at Motueka High School for a number of years teaching Sculpture, Printmaking and Painting at a senior level and Nga Toi (Maori Arts) and a comprehensive Art curriculum at a junior level. She is a practising artist, with Printmaking and Painting in mixed media as her passion, and exhibits at least once a year locally. Sue involves herself in extra-curricular activities – Sailing Team manager, Production back stage manager, Talent Quest participant and back stage manager – to build relationships with students and share the enthusiasm they have for such activities. Elsa O'Sullivan, OS - Year 9 Dean
Elsa is the Year 9 Dean. She has been at Motueka High School since 2004. She has taught Social Studies, English and Community Issues. Elsa has a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Diploma of Education from Melbourne University, Australia. Judy Thorp, TH - International Director
In her work, Judy meets and/or corresponds with recruiting agencies from around the world to bring fee-payment international students to Motueka High School. As International Director she confirms that all immigration, insurance and pre-arrival conditions are met. Once the students are here, Judy assists in their pastoral care, working with Deans and teachers on relevant school matters. She also helps answer their many questions, supports them in their travel plans and sporting activities and runs special end of the year programs for them. Allison Jensen, JN - Special Needs Teacher
Allison has been teaching at Motueka High School since 2007. She is the Teacher in charge at Te Whare Pukeone - The Base - and workds with ORRS funded students. Allison also provides guidance and professional development opportunities for Teacher Aides. email:ajensen@motuekahigh.school.nz

Anthea has been teaching at Motueka High School since 1999. Her teaching subjects are Science, Horticulture and Biology. Anthea enjoys the small size of Motueka High School and values the opportunities that gives her to get to know most of the students. Beccy is a member of the Physical Education Department and teaches Health, Physical Education, and Sport and Recreation. Celeste Ryan, RY - Teacher: Technology Department
Celeste was enticed to move to Motueka because of the beautiful environment and small community. She started at Motueka High School as a first year teacher in 2009. John McFadgen, MF - Teacher: English Department
John is an English teacher, teaching classes ranging from Year 9 to Year 13. Another role he fills is as a Duty Team Leader, which means he has responsibility to oversee discipline outside the classroom, and also a part in ensuring the overall discipline system works well. Kate Matthews, MW - Teacher: Physical Education/Health
Kate has been teaching at Motueka High School since 2006. She was born in Nelson but grew up in Wellington. In 2004 she decided to move back to the region after studying at Waikato University. This year she teaches Junior Health and Physical Education along with Year 11 Sport and Recreation. In previous years Kate has also taught Year 11 Health and Physical Education and Year 12 Sport and Recreation. She is passionate about improving health and wellbeing of students at school and is involved with the Community Health Action Group as a staff liaison.

Michele Hudson, HN - French Teacher
Michele speaks French and German and runs French classes for Years 9 to 13, as well as being available to help those students studying German or other languages by correspondence. Muriel Moran - Gateway Coordinator
Muriel has lived in the Motueka district since 1978 and both her daughters attended Motueka High School. She has worked in education from early childhood to adult level including three years VSA in Cambodia. She likes helping the Gateway students find a pathway to follow and gain learning in. Also very satisfying is to meet students later in their lives and hear how their Gateway experience has taken them further. Sandy is an English teacher teaching years 9 to 12, Bus Controller (responsible for 300 students on 8 bus routes), received a National Excellence in Teaching Award in 2001 and has had 30 years teaching experience. Sarah Fyfe, FY - English Teacher, Special Needs Teacher, ESOL Teahcer

Sharon Beuke, BK - Teacher: History
Sharon has been teaching Years 11, 12 and 13 History at Motueka High School for the past nine years and considers herself fortunate to teach a subject which she really enjoys, and to be in a school which she holds in high regard. She started her teaching career at Waimea College some years ago, took time out to raise four children (all of whom attended Motueka High School). She also worked part-time as Coordinator for Adult Literacy and as a tutor in Written and Oral Communication Skills at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. Tracey Ellery, EL - Literacy Support Teacher

Adrienne Fry - Sports Coordinator
Adrienne is the Sports Co-ordinator and is employed for 25 hours per week. Adrienne offers support to individual sports codes, sports administration and budget, heads the Student sports committee, a member of the Staff sports committee, organises the inter-school fixtures and promotes sport in general for ALL student participation.

Alison Reid - Office Receptionist
Alison is the Office Receptionist. She is also part of the team keeping a check on student absences. In addition she is Secretary for the Board of Trustees.

Claire is the Principal's PA and Office Manager. She is also the Adult and Community Education Coordinator.

Maintains the school grounds

Ellie Tomsett - Homestay Manager
Responsible for recruitment of homestay families and the placement of international students with those homestay families.

Helen Westrupp - Secretary
Helen is the School Secretary and is responsible for all student records. Helen is also involved in NCEA data input and other admin duties.

Jane Anderson - Science Technician
As Science Technician, Jane supports the Science Department in their work by preparing equipment and chemicals for lessons. She has a role in ensuring safe practice in the science laboratories.

Jean Nikkel - Teacher Aide

Jo Ryder - Admin Support
Jo provides admin support to guidance, including support to the deans. Main responsibility is following up student absences at school. She also provides relief reception & assists in the LRC department.
