Principal
Scott has been Principal at Motueka High School since October 2009. Born and educated in Nelson, his most recent role was as Deputy Principal at Ashburton College in Mid-Canterbury. Scott places a strong emphasis on the importance of relationships within a school environment and is impressed with the sense of community at Motueka High School. He sees a great pride in the students and is enjoying meeting parents and caregivers as he settles into his new role. While his spare time is minimal these days, Scott enjoys being in the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and being on the ‘sidelines’ at school sports, musical and cultural events.

Paul is one of the Deputy Principals. He has responsibility for day to day school organisation, School Calendar, Discipline, Detention System, Passes, Emergency Procedures, Prize Giving, NZQA Liaisons for NCEA, Exams (internal & external), Parent Evenings, Duty System and Marks Analysis. Paul also teaches a Mathematics class.

Deputy Principal
Marieann is the Deputy Principal in charge of discipline and guidance of years 9, 11 and 13. She also heads the Curriculum committee, co-ordinates the guidance system and learning support department, inducts new teachers, assists with the Student Council and leadership development programme, administers the welfare fund, reporting to parents, performance management, uniform, Ball, marketing, health and safety and gifted and talented provision. She enjoys working closely with the rest of the senior management team. Marieann also teaches an English class.

Timetabler
Bruce joined the staff of Motueka High School in 1981. His present teaching programme is in Science and Chemistry, but has included Mathematics in the past. The other major task he does is to build the School Timetable for each new year. This is an ongoing task these days, with sometimes major changes occurring every Term. He continues to enjoy the working environment at Motueka High School – a great team of supportive colleagues to work with, and generally friendly motivated students to teach. It is very special to be able to play a small part in developing the leaders of tomorrow.

Head of Mathematics
Faith has lived in the Motueka area since 2000 and she really enjoys the outdoor recreational opportunities this area has to offer, especially cycling and kayaking. She is currently the HOD of Maths and this year is teaching two Y9's and a Y11 class. Faith has also taken on the role of the In-school Facilitator for the Secondary Numeracy Project. She is an active member of the local Golf Club and is the teacher-in-charge of Golf. Assistant HOD Technology
James is the Assistant Head of Department Technology and teaches senior Food Technology and junior Social Studies. He worked as a chef for 12 years both in New Zealand and in London before returning to New Zealand and completing a History degree. James moved to Motueka having enjoyed cycle touring through the area previously. He enjoys reading as well as many different outdoor pursuits, especially tramping.

Jan co-ordinates the Learner Support Department which includes Special Needs, Alternative Education, Special Assessment Conditions, Immigrant Students, Gifted and Talented students and the Community Volunteers at Motueka High School programme. She also writes reading and literacy resources for Learning Media Ltd and the Rainbow Reading programme. These resources are distributed to schools in New Zealand and the South Pacific.

Mary has a varied role as Executive Officer. Her responsibility for the school’s finances covers everything from budgeting through to fundraising; the Property portfolio requires management of the buildings and grounds; and in between times there is payroll to keep on track. And lest she forget what the job’s about, Mary loves her involvement with students through the Student Council.

Head of Science
Nick teaches Physics at Levels 2-4 and is the ICT Co-ordinator. He holds degrees in Physics and Instrumentation from Brunel University, UK and in Astrophysics from Queen Mary and Westfield College, UK. Nick taught for 3 years each at Southfield Community College and St Marylebone School, both in London. He came to New Zealand late in 2004 from Saltus Grammar School in Bermuda where he also taught for 3 years. Nick believes he has settled in the most beautiful place in the world and he intends to bring up his two boys here. He is also currently the contact person for squash activities.

Karen is the Year 11 Dean. Karen rejoined the staff late in 2006, having been a long term reliever in 2003. She grew up in Nelson and decided to move back to the region in 2003 to be closer to extended family and enjoy better weather. She currently teaches Information and Communication Technology and Taha Maori. In the community she is involved with Te Rourou Kura (Secondary Schools Kapa Haka) and Te Kahui Matauranga (Maori Education Committee).

Year 10 Dean
Sue Thorp has been on the staff at Motueka High School for a number of years teaching Sculpture, Printmaking and Painting at a senior level and Nga Toi (Maori Arts) and a comprehensive Art curriculum at a junior level. She is a practising artist, with Printmaking and Painting in mixed media as her passion, and exhibits at least once a year locally. Sue involves herself in extra-curricular activities – Sailing Team manager, Production back stage manager, Talent Quest participant and back stage manager – to build relationships with students and share the enthusiasm they have for such activities. All of Sue’s 3 children have been educated at Motueka High School with great success, and she is currently Dean of Y10.

International Director
In her work, Judy meets and/or corresponds with recruiting agencies from around the world to bring fee-payment international students to Motueka High School. As International Director she confirms that all immigration, insurance and pre-arrival conditions are met. Once the students are here, Judy assists in their pastoral care, working with Deans and teachers on relevant school matters. She also helps answer their many questions, supports them in their travel plans and sporting activities and runs special end of the year programs for them. Frequent meetings with the Homestay Co-ordinator are held.

Muriel has lived in the Motueka district since 1978 and both her daughters attended Motueka High School. She has worked in education from early childhood to adult level including three years VSA in Cambodia. She likes helping the Gateway students find a pathway to follow and gain learning in. Also very satisfying is to meet students later in their lives and hear how their Gateway experience has taken them further. The Gateway programme is very grateful to all the employers who so willing give Motueka High students these work experience opportunities.

Sharon has been teaching Years 11, 12 and 13 History at Motueka High School for the past nine years and considers herself fortunate to teach a subject which she really enjoys, and to be in a school which she holds in high regard. She started her teaching career at Waimea College some years ago, took time out to raise four children (all of whom attended Motueka High School). She also worked part-time as Coordinator for Adult Literacy and as a tutor in Written and Oral Communication Skills at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. In addition to teaching History, Sharon teaches Future Problem Solving and is the Teacher in Charge of the School Library.
