Senior Management

Scott Haines, HN - Principal
Scott has been Principal at Motueka High School since October 2009. Born and educated in Nelson, his most recent role was as Deputy Principal at Ashburton College in Mid-Canterbury. Scott places a strong emphasis on the importance of relationships within a school environment and is impressed with the sense of community at Motueka High School. He sees a great pride in the students and is enjoying meeting parents and caregivers as he settles into his new role. While his spare time is minimal these days, Scott enjoys being in the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and being on the ‘sidelines’ at school sports, musical and cultural events.

Paul Blackbeard, BB - Deputy Principal
Paul is one of the Deputy Principals. He has responsibility for day to day school organisation, School Calendar, Discipline, Detention System, Passes, Emergency Procedures, Prize Giving, NZQA Liaisons for NCEA, Exams (internal & external), Parent Evenings, Duty System and Marks Analysis. Paul also teaches a Mathematics class.

Marieann Keenan, KE - Deputy Principal
Marieann is the Deputy Principal in charge of discipline and guidance of years 9, 11 and 13. She also heads the Curriculum committee, co-ordinates the guidance system and learning support department, inducts new teachers, assists with the Student Council and leadership development programme, administers the welfare fund, reporting to parents, performance management, uniform, Ball, marketing, health and safety and gifted and talented provision. She enjoys working closely with the rest of the senior management team. Marieann also teaches an Englis class.

Associate Staff

Adrienne Fry - Sports Coordinator
Adrienne is the Sports Co-ordinator and is employed for 20 hours per week. Adrienne offers support to individual sports codes, sports administration and budget, heads the Student sports committee, a member of the Staff sports committee, organises the inter-school fixtures and promotes sport in general for ALL student participation.

Alison Reid - Office Receptionist
Alison is the Office Receptionist. She is also part of the team keeping a check on student absences. In addition she is Secretary for the Board of Trustees.

Anna Mitchell - Tu Tangata Coordinator
Tu Tangata is a community-based programme running within Motueka HIgh S?chool and several other schools throughout NZ. The aim of the programme is to provide volunteer adult support for students within their classrooms. We all need a hand sometimes - can't remember what the teacher's instructions were? Which page are we reading? I forgot my pen/paper/rubber/ruler etc. I don't understand. What does this mean? Can you help me??? We've all been there and it was hard if we didn't get help. Tu Tangata volunteers are here to give that help to students with any of these regular classroom issues.

Newly appointed to this position. Responsible for recruitment of homestay families and the placement of international students with those homestay families.

Helen is the School Secretary and is responsible for all student records. Helen is also involved in NCEA data input and other admin duties.

Amy Gass, GS - Year 12 Dean
Amy is the Year 12 Dean this year and teaches in the Science Department.

Elsa O'Sullivan, OS - Year 9 Dean
Elsa is the Year 9 Dean for 2010. She teaches in the English Department.

Judy Thorp - Dean of International Students
Assist in the general pastoral care of our international students, communicating with their teachers and host families on relevant matters and liaising with the Home Host Co-ordinator.

Karen Wells, WE - Year 11 Dean
Karen is the Year 11 Dean for 2010. She is the Teacher in Charge of ICT and also teaches Taha Maori.

Luke Williams, WM - Associate Year 9 Dean
Luke is the Year 9 Associate Dean. He also teaches Computer Studies and Media Studies.

Sue Thorp, TP - Year 10 Dean
Sue is the Year 10 Dean and a member of the Art Department

Te Marunui Toki, TK - Dean of Maori Students
Te Marunui is responsible for the pastoral needs of Maori students and liaison with their whanau.

Tony Aikenhead, AK - Year 13 Dean
Tony is the Year 13 Dean for 2010. He is also the Head of Transition.

Middle Management

Adrienne Heath, HE - Head of Music
Adrienne joined the staff at the start of the year and takes on the role as Head of Music. Adrienne teaches music at all year levels and is also teaching a junior Social Studies class.

Bruce Stare, ST - Chemistry Teacher and Timetabler
Bruce joined the staff of Motueka High School in 1981, working in Chemistry, Science and Mathematics, and coaching Badminton. The leadership of the then HOD Science, Larry Ching, and the "Can Do" attitude and inclusiveness of the rest of the science team inspired me to stay, and he continues to enjoy working here with Motueka's young leaders. These days Bruce focuses on just Science and Chemistry, writing and maintaining the school timetable taking up most remaining spare time at school. Out of School activities include cycling, tramping and gardening.

Faith Jackson, JA - Head of Mathematics
Faith has lived in the Motueka area since 2000, and she really enjoys the outdoor recreational opportunities this area has to offer. She is currently the HOD of Maths and this year is teaching Y10, Y11 and Y12 Maths classes. She is an active member of the local Golf Club and is the teacher-in-charge of Golf. Our school teams always perform well at the Tasman District Championships and the Motueka Golf Club is very supportive of our school players.

Graeme Coleman, CM - Head of Social Science
Graeme is the Head of the Social Science Department and teaches Social Studies, Geography and Tourism. Other areas in the Department include History and Community Issues.

Jan Trafford, TR - Head of Learner Support
As Head of Learner Support Jan co-ordinators programmes for students with needs. She also teaches a Year 9 English Class and oversees the Alternative Education Programme at ATET.

Jill Wipou, WP - Head of English
Jill is a returnee in 2002 after having left at the end of 1986 to teach in Auckland. Jill is HOD English, teaching English to all year levels. Extra-curricular interests include waka ama, softball and basketball.

Josh Burrell, BU - Head of Outdoor Education
Josh is the Head of the Outdoor Education Department and, therefore, spends a lot of time outside the classroom involved in kayaking, camping, tramping, snow caving, etc.

Kane Dyer, DY - Head of Art
Kane joined the Art Department in 2009 and teaches Art and Photography. Other areas within the Department include Scultpure and Printmaking.

Mary Wilson - Executive Officer
Mary has a varied role as Executive Officer, including convenor of the Board’s Finance and Property Committees. Her responsibility for the school’s finances covers everything from budgeting through to fundraising; the Property portfolio requires management of the buildings and grounds; and in between times there is payroll to keep on track. And lest she forget what the job’s about, Mary loves her involvement with students through assisting with a form class and mentoring senior students. She makes time to weight-train and cycle to keep her sane.

Nick Wiffen, WF - Head of Science
Nick teaches Physics at Levels 2-4 and is the ICT Co-ordinator. He holds degrees in Physics and Instrumentation from Brunel University, UK and in Astrophysics from Queen Mary and Westfield College, UK. Nick taught for 3 years each at Southfield Community College and St Marylebone School, both in London. He came to New Zealand late in 2004 from Saltus Grammar School in Bermuda where he also taught for 3 years. Nick believes he has settled in the most beautiful place in the world and he intends to bring up his two boys here. He is also currently the contact person for squash activities.

Peter Allan, AL - Head of Technology
Peter is Head of the Technology Department, a diverse group that includes Food, Fabric, ICT and Workshop. Peter teaches Automative, Graphics, Engineering and Metalwork.

Todd Adams, AD - Head of Physical Education
Todd teaches Physical Education and Health. He is also responsible for Professional Development, Relief and House Events.

Tony Aikenhead, AK - Head of Transition
In his role as Head of Transition, Tony teaches Careers, is the E4E Co-ordinator, Correspondence Co-ordinator and Youth Apprenticeship Co-ordinator. Tony is also involved with our High Performance Athletes.

Andrea has taught at Motueka High previously and is LTR while the incumbent is on study leave.

Anthea Garmey GA - Biology and Horticulture Teacher
Anthea has been teaching at Motueka High School since 1999. Her teaching subjects are Science, Horticulture and Biology. She has been involved in the following extra curricular activities: organising school tennis, Spirit of New Zealand voyages, the "Rat Trappers" who have won a range of Environmental awards. Anthea was away from school in 2005 to care for her gorgeous baby, Hannah, who was born in February 2005. In her spare time, Anthea enjoys gardening, boating, fishing and the NZ bush.

Elsa has been at Motueka High School since 2004 when she started as a relief teacher. She has taught Social Studies, English and Community Issues. Elsa has a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Diploma of Education from Melbourne University, Australia. She has taught at schools in both Victoria and Queensland before moving to New Zealand.

John is an English teacher, teaching classes ranging from Year 9 to Year 13. Another role he fills is as a Duty Team Leader, which means he has responsibility to oversee discipline outside the classroom, and also a part in ensuring the overall discipline system works well. John is also a member of the ICT Committee.

Sandy Wright WR - English Teacher
Sandy is an English teacher teaching years 9 to 12, Bus Controller (responsible for 300 students on 8 bus routes), received a National Excellence in Teaching Award in 2001 and has had 30 years teaching experience. She has previously taught at Ashburton College, Burnside High School in Christchurch, Shirley Boys High School also in Christchurch, St Matthews College for Girls in Masterton (PR2 Head of English, Social Studies & History) and Kuranui College in Greytown .

Sharon Beuke BK - History Teacher
Sharon has been teaching Years 11, 12 and 13 History at Motueka High School for the past five years and considers herself fortunate to teach a subject which she really enjoys, and to be in a school which she holds in high regard. She started her teaching career at Waimea College some years ago, took time out to raise four children (all of whom attended Motueka High School). She also worked part-time as Coordinator for Adult Literacy and as a tutor in Written and Oral Communication Skills at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. In addition to teaching History, Sharon is the Teacher in Charge of the school Library.
