Sports

Motueka High School is committed to promoting and encouraging participation and excellence in our sporting students in recreational or competitive sports.

We provide exciting opportunities for our students with our facilities here at school.  These include – gymnasium, fitness centre, dance studio, swimming pool, new multi-purpose artificial sports turf and fields for cricket, rugby and football.

We have an annual Sports Exchange with Buller High School in Westport where each school will host the exchange biannually.  The student sports committee promotes and encourages participation for all students to enjoy lunchtime activities.  This gives students an opportunity to participate and have fun in a non-competitive way.

We encourage school spirit by holding our School Sports Day early in the year between our four houses – Nuku (Green), Wai (Blue), Ahi (Red) and Angi (Yellow).

School championships are held for Athletics, Swimming and Cross Country.  At the completion of the school year, a Sports Prizegiving is held to celebrate the success of our sporting students.

Motueka High School has an impressive record of success in sporting competitions at local, regional, and national levels. We have a proud history of New Zealand Representatives in both individual and team sports.

Currently, Motueka High School is proud to have two ex-students reach the pinnacle of sport: Olympic Bronze Jonelle Price (nee Richards) Equestrian London 2012 and Olympic Gold Medallist Risaleaana Pouri-Lane Women's Rugby 7's Tokyo 2020.

Eligibility criteria for the Blues Award at Motueka High School.

The Blues Award is a prestigious accolade that recognises exceptional achievement in sports at the highest levels.

To qualify for the Blues Award, students must meet the following criteria:

  1. National Representation or Competition: Students should be competing in New Zealand representative teams or at a national level in either individual or team sports. This means they must have been selected to represent New Zealand or compete in national championships.

  2. Top 3 Placement: For individual sports or team sports where students compete as part of a team, they must achieve a placement in the top 3 at national competition/s. This demonstrates a significant level of excellence and accomplishment in their sport.

  3. International Competition: Alternatively, students who participate in international competitions where they represent New Zealand or are competing at a high level internationally are also eligible. This includes any competition held outside of New Zealand that involves representing New Zealand or competing at an international standard.

It is important to note that in the past, eligibility for the Blues Award was believed to be restricted to students who had represented Motueka High School at these levels. However, this is no longer the case. Through discussion within our Sports Department we believe that all sporting achievements should be recognised, regardless of whether the student represented the school directly. As long as the student is enrolled at Motueka High School, their significant sporting accomplishments should be celebrated and will be, starting this year at our upcoming Sports Prize Giving.

Any student wishing to be considered for the Blues Award should have documented proof of their achievements and participation as outlined. This may include certificates, official results, or letters of verification from relevant sports bodies.

If a student may be eligible for the Blues Award, send their information to the Sports Co-ordinator sport.admin@motuekahigh.school.nz

We want to ensure that every deserving student has the opportunity to be recognised for their achievements.
